It's More Fun to be a Student Nurse!
Yesterday is the end of our duty for this week, though what happened is far from what we expected. Supposedly, it's our CCU duty, but because of our own stubbornness, it was being deferred just in time we were ready for it, good for us but it still has disadvantages because we still have to be rotated in that area later or in the last weeks of the semester. Anyway, we still enjoyed our duty even though they divided our block and inserted us to the different area units as an alternative solution because we don't have a designated place to go. I was assigned to be the team leader for a particular block having their duty in Med-Surg area. It was fun, I even became the boss! At the end of our duty, we had a quiz and I included a question asking what did they learn from the duty as an evaluation and learning summary. I got amused with their answers and thought of sharing it.
These are the things they've learned...
...."I have learned so much from this duty though this is my first time in a Med-Surg area. It is very different from our other duties, we have to care for different patients (medical, surgical, pedia) with different cases. After a long time, we experienced being a staff nurse again and recalled all of my skills."
...."I have learned to handle a patient with seizure disorder (tonic-clonic) during attacks and observe proper seizure precaution. Babies are more prone to injury while having attacks so they must be properly cared and observed for most of the times."
...."I have learned to interact with a 4-year old client and how to help him while undergoing a very stressful condition. I've also learned skills like how to reinsert an IV and render a TLC (Tender-Loving-Care) to the patient."
...."I have learned how to compute for the I & O (intake and output) especially on the IV fluids."
...."I have learned that taking care of an energetic child (hyperactive) is really hard especially in giving bath. It takes 2 to 3 persons to be able to give a baby a bath but I enjoyed the experience."
...."I have learned to interact well with pediatric patient. Also, it is a great pressure if your patient happened to be the daughter of your nursing professor and one of your clinical instructors in the floor."
...."I have learned how to care for a stroke and elderly patient. I've learned how to change diapers, do NVS (NeuroVital Signs), keep NGT (Nasogastric tube) in place, assess oxygen status of the patient and anticipate patient's needs."
...."I have learned how to lower down the temperature of a dengue patient who has fever."
Those are just some of the things that we are encountering in the floor day-by-day during our duties, who says it's easy to be a student nurse? Well, it is hard, but we find pleasure and fulfillment on what we do. Indeed, IT IS MORE FUN TO BE A NURSE! :D
